We slouch, we slump, we cross our legs, we do "laying dog" (whatever that is). People sit, animals sit, heck I think even insects sit in some form, that's just a fact of life.
Today, we'll tackle briefly the importance of sitting "straight". Sitting straight as defined by sheer common knowledge is sitting in a straight or | , 90 degrees manner.
As a person who glares into a computer all day, I have to "sit". My most common sitting position is most probably slouching. Arguments have happened concerning my sitting position. I often sat in a scythe-like position. People claim that I'm not sitting right and that I'll have back issues at some point. Their claims were right.
I have back issues now, lowering back issues, probably either L4 or L5. For people who workout, that means that I have core issues or my core is weak, so I need to do deadlifts more.
The average person, that's us, understand that we must straight to not only have good posture but also to avoid back issues but little did we know that this whole sitting straight thing (90 degrees) is actually bad for us or so professionals argue.
The professionals, or as I like to playfully call em' "back people" {-_^}. Before we briefly dive into their opinions, let me just state this. I am person who has back issues, what I have is probably "lumbar pain" that is due to slumping or slouching a lot, so for the LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THIS WORLD, don't slouch anymore, okay? I myself have been trying to sit straight, not easy though "bad habits die hard".
Okay, so some professionals argue that the "proper sitting posture" isn't 90 degrees or straight, because firstly our spines were made to be straight and second "90 degrees, caused disks to move the most." It's a little bit curved. Some argue that we should sit straight because that's proper.
Anyway, since, I said briefly let's just get this "out in the open". Sitting straight for a very long time will put heavy stress on your spine. Why, your weight then posture = gravity = stress / unwanted pressure on your spine = pain, period.
The proper position of "sitting" is neither "straight or 90 degrees". It's a straight-ish leaned back/forward position. Don't sit for too long, walk every now and then but hey, why not give it a try to find out which is more suitable for you.
Sincerely,
-John Arcenas
